I'm going to make this short.I had another thread about a missing problem I was having , & all I heard was the new msd coil I had was junk & I needed to take it off.So explain to me why the #1 electronics company is producing junk coils that are made for my car specifically.Maybe it will save me some money down the road. ( problem turned out to be o2 sensor )
Alot of people have had problems with the MSD boxes blowing out other electrical components, and the boxes themselves seem to be vulnerable to water and vibration. Coils seem to be doing the same thing.....all of them put out huge amounts of juice but can't stay functional for a long time.
It probably wouldnt stop me from using them if my engine needed them though.

I had a 6-AL on my Nova for nearly 10 years with NO problems. I think people need to realize, they are not designed to get really hot, so you need to keep them where they can keep cool or at least get some fresh air.
If my vette needed more juice I'd buy another MSD product without thinking twice about it. I do suppose it is possible they had design issues or production issues for a batch, but MSD makes very good stuff.
Nothing wrong with MSD stuff. Its like anything else in this sport. There will be people that love certain stuff and people that hate it. That is what happens when people's emotions get involved.
I have seen the same talk on super stock forums about HEI stuff. They all say its junk - I have not had any problems with my ignition and i have a mix of accel, MSD, and HEI - who knows.
Thanks for all the replies , I feel better now....I guess it all boils down to people want to go fast but expect the aftermarket parts to last as long as stock & it doesn't work that way. ( If you want to play , your gonna pay )....
A few months ago I replaced the stock coil in my 95 LT-1 with an MSD coil (Part No. 8226). Not only did this NOT cause any problems but the car seems to be running much better. A chronic engine miss that I had mostly disappeared as well.
Well, so far this year I have replaced 2 MSD Coils, both of them part number 8207 which is their Blaster SS coil. The coils were in different cars, both had a MSD 6AL ignition box. I also have replaced 6 MSD Digital 6 boxes this year. One one customer 2 boxes and he is on his third. The others were different cars. The old 6AL box was bullet proof as long as it was shielded against the elements. Their digital boxes SUCK in my opinion. I recommened either Crane or Mallory for their digital boxes. I have never had one of the Mallory boxes go south. Their uni-lite distributors on the other hand are a different story. Not so much about the electronics but their mechanical advance distributors leave a bit to be desired. I haven't had much problems with the MSD distributors at all. Most people by them because of their name. Sort a like Rolex vs Omega. Ask anyone if they know what a Rolex is, 99.99% will know what it is, ask anyone about Omega watches and you won't find too many that do know about them. For me I would take the Omega over the Rolex, and the Mallory over the MSD any day.
Got about 30'000mi. on my MSD 6-BTM other than increased plug and wire wear I am very happy. I know it has saved my engine many times with the adjustable timing retard. It's on my Blue Oval truck.
ON my 94 I have a 6al and dial retard.
So far I have gone through 2 Jegs coils and 1 MSD 6al box,it went to ground and fried the wires. No reason for it to put power through the box from the red power wire and gave the black ground wire power and what a barbie Q.
I reinstalled a new 6al and had no problems for the last 6 mths.
I also have a 6al on my 86 for 2 years no problems yet.
I do have both boxes installed inside the car.
I've been running an MSD 6-Al box and Blaster coil for many years in my other car for years with no problems. The box is even in the engine compartment and is subjected to heat and I've gotten it wet countless
times. Must be the old style tjwong is talking about cause its like 8 years old.
The msd box's rev limiter saved my engine 3 times this year.
I've been thinking about it for that exact reason, timing adjust is a plus.
It is my understanding that Mr. Gasket is now mfg. MSD, as well as mallory distr. boxes et al.
