I just got a code 32 yesterday coming home from work. My shop manual says to hook up a TECH 1 and try to activate the EGR valve. I am thinking that the TECH 1 is an expensive GM type diagnostic tool? Does anyone know if the freeware software on the internet will perform this function? "Activate the EGR"?

The Vetronix Tech-1A, MasterTech, and Tech-2 scan-tools are bi-directional -- that means they don't only read data, but can send commands to activate subsystems. Most, if not all, other scan-tools are not capable of sending commands to activate these systems.
I doubt that any freeware is capable of it.
But, you can use a hand vacuum pump and a gauge to check the EGR system.
The manual gives a procedure that starts with activating the EGR Valve. The procedure goes into checking if it's the valve or the actuator/control module that's under the plenum. What amount of vacumm should open the EGR Valve? If the valve opens with vacumm and stays open, does that mean the actuator/control module is bad?
Thanks Bogus; it takes a good 15 minutes or more to set the code. I cleared it last night and it took 15 minutes to show up this morning. Shut the car off and restart it and the SES light is out.

my valve is bad, dealer says 160 for the part plus labor. also paid 85 to have them check the codes Am I being hosed? Do it yourself job? I have one day to fix it as I have a weekend trip planned. Thoughts??
when I was throwing a code 32-I acted on advice from this forum-I replaced the EGR switch, some forum members state 95% of the time a code 32 is more than likely the switch (cheap) worked for me-of course mine is a 87.
While I have not performed this myself, yet, it appears to be a rather simple matter. Corvette Fever Magazine had an article a while back about 'Tracking Down The Troublesome Code 32' or similar. I found it helpful. Good magazine.
When it's my turn, I'll replace both at the same time. I'm already there and if one is bad, maybe the other is damaged.

when you say switch, do you mean the EGR Solenoid Valve. I can't find anything on the Advance Auto site that says switch. I just started getting a code 32. The EGR valve is new.
