Last night, I replaced my alternator because of the battery light. Now it seems like my AIR pump is next to go. I know it is my AIR pump because of the sound it makes. Sounds like a whining noise with a little chucking. Doesn't ever seem to go away now. Took of the serpentine belt again and spun the AIR pump pulley. Seems like it is harder to turn than normal and yes it does make a chunking sound when it is spun. What should I do now??? Is it possible to "gut" the air pump and make it stop chucking and whining??? Do I have to take the pump off??? Can I make it a frictionless idler instead of slapping on an AIR pump delete kit??? Any help is appreciated!!
I opened the pump on my '85, gutted it, regreased the one bearing, and reinstalled. Spins easily and quietly, and now serves the same function as an air pump eliminator.
The reason the air pump is harder to turn by hand is normal and its because there are the fiberboard like blades in there that sort of "scrape" inside when the spin, moving in and out.The engine spins it much faster than you can so you may feel more resistance when turning it by hand.
They can be knocked out with a screw driver and a hammer. However, theres alot of debris so have a shop vacuum handy to siphon it out.If you get the blades all the way out,and it still makes noise, theres a good bet the bearings are bad.In fact,I knew someone who had a bad air pump.He bought a reman one from advance and gave his old core to them. The he gutted the new air pump out and made it a freewheeling unit.Worked great to say the least.
