i was thinking of building a new engine. i was going to take a 400 block and put in a 350 crank so i can rev the thing higher (much higher) then my stock 1987 L98. i was wondering what i could use as heads and intake but stay street legal in cali. anyone have any ideas. or any other ideas on a different engine build. i was going to drive the L98 till it blows up or something haha and be building a new engine on the side.
I like your initial goal but there may be a better way for you to go. Consider building a 383 and build some torque instead of RPM and you will keep your RPM down and have more seat of the pants snap. An even better idea would be to build a 406 and make it a torque monster but it would cost you obviously more to do this but the end result would be more impressive. Cubes are typically better than RPM in a street driven car.
A 406 would be ideal but you might have trouble getting air to it. The 406's I raced always needed a ton of cam and even more cylinder head to run really well. But they did ok for the most part without, just look at what you are putting into it when you make your power assumptions. Oh and the 377's are great with like a crower rod. They cruise right on up to 8500 with the right parts but, those parts are not cheap or emissions legal so go with a 406.
