display panel
I just bough my very first 1987 Corvette wich I am restoring now The backlighting of the LCD panels does not work, the text in the centre panel does work, so the reostat is fine. Where can I test if voltage is present and please provide me with some tips how to get the display panels out for repair.
The (hard to read without light) velocity meter gives a max of 120 kM/hr (in meteric mode) wich seems quite slow for a corvette. Does this switch over to an other scale or do I have only digital info for higher velocities?
Love to hear from you, regards
Nico

Try this first. Remove the plastic bezel and then you will see 4 small aluminum covers. Behind each of those is a bulb. You can pop these covers off to see if the bulb is blown out. These bulbs provide all the backlighting for the display.

Yep you guessed it. After 120 kM/hr (85 MPH) you just have the digital numbers for anything higher.

You might also want to purchase Gordon Killebrews book on digital dashes, it has some very good info and it's only about $30.
Good luck
Thanks a lot. I did take the display unit out (after an hour of carefull investigations how) because I did read that the solder joints of the connection between the baords sometimes come loose. So I resoldered. (my job is electronics, so that was no problem). If I ever have a problem with the unit, I follow your advice to buy the book for sure.
Thanks a lot,
Nico

You are right on target. Thanks a lot. I did take the metal cover off and found the bulbs. All four bad. I could not buy this type here in Spain. There are correct bulbs available for lighting systems in houses, but they are 10 Watts minimum. That is for sure too much and the bezzel will melt I suppose. So I bought the RS type 577-516. When you spread the pins a mm, they fit but are quite dim. But better than nothing until I have the original ones (15$ seems quite expensive to me for a light bulb)
After repair I did take the unit out, see my other reply.
Kind regards, Nico
