Default Clutch master or slave, which should I replace first?

Having some problems with a soft clutch pedal on my 91. About 80% of the pedal travel has very light pressure, with only the last 20% or so of travel actually allowing the clutch to release enough to shift. About 1 out of every 15 shifts the pedal goes to the floor with no release at all. Fluid seems to be holding, I havn't had to add any.

So which should I try to replace first, the slave or the master? I already have the slave off and took it partially apart, there is some rust in the bore walls...

Have a similar problem, doing both at the same time and eliminate any worries.

Do both but it's probably mostly the slave.

I presume you have tried to bleed the system.

Therefore, the Master is likely your problem, but you should replace both.

Reason? You have already confirmed the slave is not leaking past the seal (otherwise you would have mentioned the fluid in the nose rubber seal), which is the traditional failure point.

So more likely the fluid is getting around the Master's seals, reducing its output pressure.

By the way, even if you don't have the ZF transmission, ZFDOC.COM has good info on clutches which should apply, so give it a read...

Hope this helps...

Definitely replace both AND the hose!

See zfdoc website for reasons, how to buy and how to replace!
