Iv'e changed water pumps on several cars before, including my 90, but all have been equiped with electric fans. I am now trying to replace the waterpump on my pickem' up truck that has a fan clutch assembly mounted on the WP. Is there a trick to loosening the fan clutch bolt? Any time I apply force to it the whole WP shaft will spin. Anyone know of a clever way to hold the WP pulley stationary to allow enough torque to break the fan clutch bolt loose?
Mr Dave, thanks also. My truck it a 98 GMC, so probably the same problem you had. If I can't find a way to wedge (or squeeze) the belt, I'll go to Aotozone to check out the specialized tools. By the way, how does that tool work. What does it mount to, or on?
Place a socket over a bolt and wedge a large flat blade across the face of the pulley between two bolt heads. Use reverse leverage to hold the pulley when tightening the bolts.
I use this method to lossen the WP bolts on my Vette.
If you have a friend nearby, put the belt on, have him grab the belt on each side of the pulley while you use the ratchet. Might be easier to hold if he has gloves or wraps a rag around the belt giving him Kung Fu grip. Sounds backyard, but it works!
Thanks for all the input guys. The tools that Slalom4me displayed should do the trick. I'll see if my parts store might have them tomorrow morning. Thanks again for all the input.
The bottom photo listed above from KD tools is the one I rented. Worked great. There was no amount of holding with the belt that was going to keep it still to loosen it.
65Z01, for some reason GM changed the way the fan clutch is attached to the water pump in the mid 90's. Instead of the four bolts holding the fan clutch to the pulley the fan clutch is threaded onto the end of the water pump.
