1985 4+3, converting to ZF6.

Is this rod to prevent from starting the car unless you're in neutral? Or to prevent shifting into reverse without the clutch in?

Either way, I don't need it right? It's got a cable leading from it to somewhere, and I'll rip it out, probably goes to the clutch pedal.

Manual shows a diagram of it going to the steering wheel.

Presumably it locks the shifter if the wheel is locked? It's never worked that way since I've had it.

I'll just rip it out.

Hey Kevin,
That's the cable that goes up to the steering column. Won't let the ignition key go to full lock (and let you pull your key out of the cylinder) unless the shifter is in reverse.

key only comes out in reverse. that way you don't have to remember to use the emergency brake. most shops are stumped as to how to remove the key when they turn the car off, they try hard to pull it out.

yea, if it made no difference, get rid of it. I don't see how you are gonna integrate that into the ZF6.

Before tearing it out I would go into the steering column and find out what has to be done to let the key go to the lock position.
That was one of the problems with mine when I bought it. Some azzhat had yanked the key out when it wasn't in reverse and screwed the tumblers up. Couldn't get the key back in to start the thing. It was stuck in the lock position

Just to clairify for Bogus and CentralCoaster. That cable does NOT lock the shifter into reverse.

Probably a pain to remove, I played with it a bit... maybe i'll just leave it in there to f--- with smog techs, give them one more thing to confuse them, as if the hood and ebrake and reverse lockout weren't enough.

"That cable does NOT lock the shifter into reverse"

Other way around.
The shifter must be in REVERSE before the key will come out.

I removed mine when converting to auto and do not recall any problems disconnecting it from the column.

It does lock the ignition....try pulling it all the way out and try turning the key , then push it in and try it. If I remember right...you push it in to disable it.....then just tape it up with electrical tape or something and shove it aside....DEFINITELY leave it in there....why would you want to spend all the trouble to take it out! It won't get in the way of anything once you push it in.

I just reached up and cut it off as far as I could - no problems.

I don't think it was working anyway - I could always remove my key in any gear!
