Default 4+3 OD TRANS question Help!!!

Ok guys and gals. When my 86 L98 is cold its in racing gears. As soon as it reaches 122 Farenheit it drops into OD. To return it to racing gears , i would press the button on top of my shifter. It does nothing. In order to bypass the shift switch, would I just have to apply 12 volts to the plug on the side of the OD unit temporarily. (push button switch?) or does it have to be a permanent 12 volts to this plug? I am pretty sure it is just the switch on top of my shifter because the OD pops in and out when shifting from first to second, at normal temp and drops into OD when it reaches temp.

I am thinking of dropping a wire down through the shifter and splice it into this plug on the side of the OD unit. Then place a starter switch and apply 12 volts to the other side of this starter switch to operate the OD unit temporarily. What you guys think? That is why I must know if it takes a temporary burst of 12 volts to switch it to OD and back. Or does it take a continuous 12 volts - on od-continuous 12 volts - off OD. Thanks in advance for any help

It sounds like your button is broken, easy fix. If you want to go to full manual control there are a couple ways to do it. Best would be to run a wire to the overdrive relay, otherwise you can burn out the OD.

The overdrive needs continuous 12V at it's side terminal to stay in overdrive.

I'm guessing the momentary switch uses some sort of latching relay or similar switch design to keep sending a constant signal to the overdrive relay.

Default Replace the switch

It is worth it to replace the switch it sounds like that's the problem. I had the same issue with my 88 and I just took the shifter asembly apart and found the switch and replace it with the one I got from a guy down in Florida, address is www.5speed.com he personally made me a switch for the car for $45, which beats the price of GM $180 +!!!! I have had the switch in for 1year now it works great now with the new switch. Don't get me wrong though changing out that switch is straight forward but a SOB job.

Thanks folks, im gonna tackle that shifter ****... If all else fails, ill just put a SinglePullSingleThrow toggle to the side terminal. To date,After I accidently blow somebodys doors off, in order to put the vehicle back into OD, I have to turn the motor off and coast for 15 seconds. Then jump start it.. Its gettin old..haha. Thanx again

If you haven't already, replace your relay. That's often the problem you've stated, and it's only 10-12$.
