I was driving my 96 LT-4 yesterday and it started sputtering and missing erratically. When I pulled the codes it showed dtc 48: MAF system fail. After arriving back home I opened up the intake air housing to take a look at the MAF. There was no trash or broken sensors. I decided to use some electrical contact cleaner to clean any small particle's off the sensors. After doing this the car seems to run better with no missing or sputtering. Drove it for 30 miles today with no problems. To be honest the car feels faster and idles better. Is it possible the MAF was good and the contact cleaner fixed it? Anyone ever used contact cleaner to clean the MAF sensor with the same results?
Thanks, Michael
I use contact spray every time and again to clean the wire too. When I first used a K&N air filter I had a heck of a time will the oil on the filter getting on the wire. The circuit also has a burn-off in that heats up the wire for a few seconds after you shut the car off to help clean it.
Can the oil from the KN take time to build up on the MAF? It has been a few month's since cleaing and oiling the filter. The car is only driven about 300 miles a month.

I take it you switched to an earlier PCM since DTC 48 isn't a '96 OBD 2 PCM code.
Got it. In response to your question about K&N oil build-up..yes, as others have mentioned it can build up on the MAF wires and cause wierd behavior. If it runs fine now that you've cleaned things up, you're good to go. You might want to pull the K&N out, wash it, re-oil it a bit more lightly than before, and then reinstall it. If you don't there's a good chance you'll get to repeat the process in the near future.
