i need help bad my 92 vette wont start.i was siting in my vette when all of a sudden i missed a couple of times then died.i started it back and it was knocking around and would not respond to the throttle.it just shook badly?thats all it does.i check the spark on one of the plugs and it looked good.i could here the fuel pump come on when i turned the key on and then go off.i turned the key back off and on but the fuel pump didnt start?im i a bad way because my wife wrecked the daily driver and this is all we have.thanks in advance.
Unscrew the cap from the fuel rail schraeder valve. W/ the key on 9 push down on the valve (like a tire air valve) and see if fuel squirts out. If not - you don't have fuel. Check the fuse. If the fuse is good, either the fuel filter is stopped up or the pickup is stopped up or the pump is bad.
If you have fuel - then you may have a bad fuel pressure regulator just not applying enough fuel - or the EGR valve could be stuck open. If you have fuel - open the throttle about 1/4 and see if it will crank.
i did the fuel check and there is fuel at the rails.it will start but id just idle real rough and no throttle response.if you try to give it the gas it dies.its like the timing is off.the last month when i would be driving it it would miss going down the road i would gas on it and it would stop?
Given this info - sounds like you don't have fuel pressure / flow. Starving for fuel will do just this.
Timing/Opti may be bad but if it is firing as you say - I would check fuel pressure before spending money on a new Opti.
Spark has to occur at the right time too! Check the timing while cranking with your timing light. Optispark is a good candidate and the timing light will confirm it.
Unfortunately you have the classic Opti failure syndrome.Water pump goes and dumps coolant on the Opti which gets inside and poof. The hint was the missing you had in the prior month.Do some searching the archives on the Optispark and you will get all the tips you need to replace it and the waterpump.Look for someone near you who has done one to help you out if possible. If you have all the parts togther and hit it hard you can do it in 1 day.The biggest problem usually is the balancer. You need a factory service manual for the torque specs and it is just good sense to have it if you work on your car.
I just had the same thing happen to my 92. Wouldn't run at anything above idle. When it did it was horrible. Missing and sputtering. Removed the opti spark after doing a little research and was shocked to find it totally corroded. Not just the cap and rotor either. The entire guts. I can't beleive the car ran for the last year considering the way it looked. And this was without a water pump leak on a car with 16K miles. Plan on getting yourself a puller for the torsional damper if you decide to replace it.
the optispark is the problem.i have a question.it looks like the rotor is melted down?can i just replace the rotor or is it part of the opti spark base?when you go to oriellys or the zone they say the dist 150.00 and the rotor and cap for 210.00.do i need both?
You will probably need both. Once you open it up if its as rusted as mine was you won't put it back in. Especially after doing all that work to get it out. When you say melted down are you refering to the epoxy coating on the top of the distributor or is it visably melted? Opti caps have a translucent epoxy coating on them.
