6-speed shifter rattle???

6-speed shifter rattle???
My shifter has been rattling lately. When I push down on the little shift pattern insert on top of the handle, it goes away.
The service manual says to check the reverse lockout to make sure the set screw is not loose, which I will do this weekend. But, if it was the reverse lockout, why would pushing on the top of the shifter handle stop it?
Anyway, now I'm curious how one tightens the actual shift ****? Do you just pry the insert out? Then is there a nut or something under there that holds the shifter handle?
