Hey Guys, Im just in the middle of tearing my 95 LT-1 down for an upcoming heads ,headers, opti, timing chain, and cam swap(real fun ).......everything is all ready to go aside from .........I removed all the bolts from my harmonic balancer......(From the LT-1 book I have)I was under the impression that once the three bolts holding the "outer" pully were removed, that it would come off pretty easily (not the case) ,then the inner hub could be removed with a standard balancer puller(if their's room)...... just wondering what size and type puller('s) some of you have used for your harmonic balancer removal, with possible frozen on outer pully like mine (while the motor was still in the car)........also does the steering rack need to be loosened and moved aside.seems real close to being In the way.........thanks in advance I "REALLY" appreciate any advice here Joe B
Thanks for your responce........but Iv'e use a half can of liquid wrench and tapped it with a brass drift from the back ,then turing the crank to several different positions, and repeating.....no luck, it's really on there.....and Im afraid to hit it hard enough to jar or mess up the rubber isolator ring in the center.....Im guessing Im gonna need a certain size puller to give slow pressure..........but I'll wait for some more advice
pics came up for me now......thanks... It's give's me a good idea what style of puller for the hub, got that one...... but getting my frozen outer pully off is another story..iv'e hit this thing so hard from the back from every section, that it's making divits in the steel........just my luck ........thanks for the replies ........anyone ever have to use some type of puller for the outer section?
the puller in my pics works also for the outer part...the hooks would catch just enough of the inner edge to hold and off it came....hooks pointing outwards and inserted in the gap between hub and pulley, tight fit and you have to hold your tongue just right. once i figured how to hold the puller it came right off.
helped a friend on his 93 and we used the puller as in my pics. removed the 3 bolts from hub/pulley. then we left the dampner on and went ahead and pulled the hub off of snout. once it started to move the outer part just fell off.
i am not real crazy about hammering on something. i have damaged way to many things. also a helpful thing is too add alittle anti-seeze between hub and dampner. makes later tear downs easier. anyways this method worked for me.
Yea Steve, I used the search feature (turned up nothing pertaining to my problem)and read for about 2 hours before posting.................Thanks okies93.....thats exactly what I was looking for, a way to pull my (frozen on) outer pulley off, with slow steady pressure.......Thanks again, and thanks alot for all of the responces .I'll give her a try tomorrow..........Joe
I have never taken the center hub off but if I remember correctly you need to use the center bolt to push on with the puller. Apparently the hub center hole is not large enough to allow the puller bolt to go through. I think you loosen the center bolt a little bit and push on the head of it with the puller bolt. I think I remember reading this when I was working on my opti last year. Hopefully someone with first hand knowledge will jump in.
Well I don't know what to tell ya Steve........I searched for a while, and I guess what I was typing in, wasn't bringing up what I was looking for with anyone having delt with a severly rusted "frozen" on "outer pully and what their recomendations were , or what "exact" puller they used for their removal.....just a bunch of pictures of regular balancer removal.....so I simply asked .....thanks again for the quick helpful answers guys ......To give an idea on how rusted on this thing was.....Tonight I broke two different style pullers from autozone attempting to do it.... Iv'e pulled many balancers over the years (just not this LT-1 type) and never had a problem like this...I used perfectly even pressure, with the bolts as even, and as short as possible, but still ,one unit bent, and the other ,a claw type, like in some of the pictures, where the claws were set to grab onto the inner section next to the bolt holes to pull just the outer pulley off ,snapped.......Luckily I was able to borrow a higher quality snap-on unit, mixed with more liquid wrench and the heat from a torch, that was able to get it off........but still It was very reluctant.......I will surely do some light sanding to all the mating surfaces and use some anti-sieze like (okies93) mentioned, I wish the factory would have put some in there......thanks again for your time guys ............Joe
