This has happened to me twice. If I shift the car to neutral with the engine off for any period of time, the car will not start for about an hour or so. I was trying to replace my u-joints this weekend and when I saw the tierod needed to be replaced I put the car back together to go to the part store and couldn't start the DAMN car.
Is this a VATS problem or do I have a problem with my neutral switch or do I need to park the car on the beach and wait for high tide(don't actually mean that, but the car is like woman. you NEVER know what it is going to do next) .
Remove the console and jump the gear selector switch and try a crank. Also, one of the wires on the gear selector switch goes to the starter solenoid and if you jump 12v to it (won't hurt anything if you get the wrong wire), the starter should crank proving the starter is ok. Also....measure the voltage on the jumper on that switch and try a crank. There must be 12v in crank position or your start enable relay is not closed either because it is defective or that VATS is not measuriing the correct pellet resistance and not closing the start enable relay. Let us know what you find and I'll explain how to test your ignition tumbler for making reliable connection to your pellet. Also, try your spare ign key as its pellet isn't as worn as your everyday key.
The car starts, but only after it sits for an hour or so. But, this only happens when the cars been left in neutral for awhile. I am using my spare key now, oh almost forgot. This happened once before, I left my lights on and turned off the car and tried to start the car. Turned off the lights and the car started after about a minute.
Your headlights have nothing to do with your starting problem, but moving the gear selector does. Your symptoms are consistant with VATS problems and particularly with the gear selector switch which you need to check out first. If it is ok, then you need to determine if the contacts in the ignition tumbler are making reliable connection to the pellet. If you want to find the problem, you are going to have to do some investigative work! Repeating the symptoms over and over and over will not fix your car.
hmmm, to have the car in anything other than park, you need the key in. If you were to leave the key in, and try to start it with the key not FULLY in, it wont start, and it wont start for a while after that no matter what you do, in this case, the 'security' light should come on to tell you that this is the case. It may be possible that when you have the key allready in, when you turn it,the key is slightly out a little, causing VATS to shut you down for a few minutes. If it happens again, try waiting about 5 minutes with the key out, then pushing in on the key as you turn it. Preferably try this first time you go to start it.
I put a hot wire to the 12 volt positive junction block and a wire to the solenoid. Placed the two wires to a push button starter switch.. never had a problem since It worked on a 86 not sure for your year .. good luck

Better hope nobody tries to steal the car, wont be hard now....
As I was replacing my ujoints at the time, I just reached in and turned the key and after I jacked up the rear I stuck in neutral. So no, I never noticed.
