Default Crank Motor OR Starter

Since I got my car I noticed it was a little hard to start. I would have to try and push the clutch through the floor board for the car to start.

Acouple days ago I attempted to start my car and it would not start at all. When I raised the hood I was able to hear spinning when attempting to start the car. So I took a hammer and gave the crank motor a good couple of whacks. The car has started up with no problem.

My question is.

Do I need to replace the starter and the crank motor or will the crank motor be good enough? Can the Crank mototr go bad with out the starter going bad?

And just so I understand, the crank motor is next to the battery and the window wiper motor, Correct?

Please don't take this the wrong way, but WTH is a "crank motor"???

If you hear spinning when you turn the key but the engine doesn't turn over, the stator in the starter is bad. Replace the starter and drive on.

When you said you had to push the clutch pedal through the floor board, I wonder if the clutch safety switch is out of adjustment. Troubleshooting that would require removing the hush panel (knee bolster) under the dash on the driver's side and contorting yourself under there and somehow put the clutch pedal through it's motion to observe the switch.

I dont really know. I was hoping you guys could tell me.

The starter is underneath the car, attached to the engine block, correct? What is the part that is next to the battery? Connected to the wall at the bottom of the windshield. This part has two cables connected to it one from the altenator and the other from the battery( I think). That is where I heard the spinning coming from and after I gave it acouple of whacks the car started better for acouple days.

The reason I ask is because I bought a starter today and when I looked at it, I noticed it looked nothing like the part that I was trying to desribe that is next to the battery.

Is the part next to the battery the stator?

I'm trying to think of what you're describing, but there's only one thing that spins associated with the starting system, and that's the starter motor mounted down on the block. If it wizzes freely without turning the engine over, it's probably a bad starter solenoid.

On the firewall... we've got, the battery, above that, cruise control, moving toward the motor we have the clutch master cylinder (for stick shifts), the brake booster and master cylinder, the fuel pump relay, the wiper motor, then the distributor. Where in reference to this stuff is what you're asking about? It's good to learn what components are called for diagnosing anything, or at least for not sounding like a dummy.

A stator is the non-rotating part of an alternator.
It could be that the same component in a starter
rotor is referred to as a stator also but I don't recall
hearing this usage.

To visualize, here is a .PDF link to
a picture of a starter.
Not exactly like yours,
but close enough.

The main case hold the armature that drives the gear.
The smaller cylinder on top holds the solenoid - on
command it pushes the gear outward to engage
with the flywheel and pulls it back out of the way
when the ignition key is released.

If the solenoid was acting up intermittantly and did
not push the gear outward, you would hear the starter
armature spinning but the engine would not turn over.

I do not know what you were hitting - maybe it is a
coincidence that the starter engaged afterward.

See anything you recognize as the whacked object ?

This is a shot of the junction block below and between
the battery and the firewall.

If you hear the starter running and the engine is not turning over the bendix may be worn. (in addition to the previously mentioned solenoid) The easiest fix is to replace the starter and solonoid at the same time. If your handy with a wrench you could replace the solonoid and the bendix, however, if your asking starter questions here I suggest you go the simple route.

I won't ruin the suspense, but it has nothing to do with your ignition system.

WOW last time i take advice from that guy. But what could be the problem??
I have to push the clutch practically through the floor and sometimes I have to pump it to get the car to start.

Could be a bad clutch safey switch. That's on the clutch pedal arm, looks like a little push button, that closes when the clutch pedal is pushed.

If not that, the antitheft system has a starter interupt relay, it opens if the alarm is tripped.

The other possibilities are bad battery cables or connections, or a bad starter solenoid.

OK great thanks central coaster. I will go ahead and put the new starter in that I bought for the car.
I was ready to install the new starter but the part that was in question looked nothing like the starter I got from the auto store.
Assuming the starter selenoid is INSIDE the starter, correct?

the solenoid is bolted to the starter, kinda looks like the shuttle attached to a 747, held in by two screws ( bolts ). the positive battery cable is connected to the solenoid along with the ignition wires, be sure to disconnect the battery cables and the ignition wires before removing the solenoid or the starter. sounds like you need the solenoid also.
