Crank Motor OR Starter
Acouple days ago I attempted to start my car and it would not start at all. When I raised the hood I was able to hear spinning when attempting to start the car. So I took a hammer and gave the crank motor a good couple of whacks. The car has started up with no problem.
My question is.
Do I need to replace the starter and the crank motor or will the crank motor be good enough? Can the Crank mototr go bad with out the starter going bad?
And just so I understand, the crank motor is next to the battery and the window wiper motor, Correct?

Please don't take this the wrong way, but WTH is a "crank motor"???If you hear spinning when you turn the key but the engine doesn't turn over, the stator in the starter is bad. Replace the starter and drive on.
When you said you had to push the clutch pedal through the floor board, I wonder if the clutch safety switch is out of adjustment. Troubleshooting that would require removing the hush panel (knee bolster) under the dash on the driver's side and contorting yourself under there and somehow put the clutch pedal through it's motion to observe the switch.
The starter is underneath the car, attached to the engine block, correct? What is the part that is next to the battery? Connected to the wall at the bottom of the windshield. This part has two cables connected to it one from the altenator and the other from the battery( I think). That is where I heard the spinning coming from and after I gave it acouple of whacks the car started better for acouple days.
The reason I ask is because I bought a starter today and when I looked at it, I noticed it looked nothing like the part that I was trying to desribe that is next to the battery.
Is the part next to the battery the stator?

On the firewall... we've got, the battery, above that, cruise control, moving toward the motor we have the clutch master cylinder (for stick shifts), the brake booster and master cylinder, the fuel pump relay, the wiper motor, then the distributor. Where in reference to this stuff is what you're asking about? It's good to learn what components are called for diagnosing anything, or at least for not sounding like a dummy.
It could be that the same component in a starter
rotor is referred to as a stator also but I don't recall
hearing this usage.
To visualize, here is a .PDF link to
a picture of a starter. Not exactly like yours,
but close enough.
The main case hold the armature that drives the gear.
The smaller cylinder on top holds the solenoid - on
command it pushes the gear outward to engage
with the flywheel and pulls it back out of the way
when the ignition key is released.
If the solenoid was acting up intermittantly and did
not push the gear outward, you would hear the starter
armature spinning but the engine would not turn over.
I do not know what you were hitting - maybe it is a
coincidence that the starter engaged afterward.

I have found my digital camera and have an image to send if somebody will take a look at it.
Thank you.

I have to push the clutch practically through the floor and sometimes I have to pump it to get the car to start.

If not that, the antitheft system has a starter interupt relay, it opens if the alarm is tripped.
The other possibilities are bad battery cables or connections, or a bad starter solenoid.
I was ready to install the new starter but the part that was in question looked nothing like the starter I got from the auto store.
Assuming the starter selenoid is INSIDE the starter, correct?
