Yesterday the car was running fine until I turned a corner. The car dropped to second gear. I accelerated to about 4000RPM and all of a sudden the engine started bogging and missing. Forturately I was only 1\2 mile from home. By the time a got there the car was sputtering and stalled in my drive way. The engine also made a noise like a lifter was loose on the left bank. Before I bring this to a mechanic who wants to tear the engine down to find the problem I would really appreciate some input from forum members on possible problems that might be computer, MAF related which could cause these symptoms. I checked the spark plugs and the #1 spark plug was wet. All the rest looked good (light brown). Also a code 34 was set. I let the car sit awhile and tried to restart but failed. So I disconnected the MAF and got the car to start and idle but very rough. The apparent lifter noise is still there but not as loud as when I first got home. The plug wires and injectors all ohmed out alright. The coil also checked out OK. I have a new MAF on order along with the 2 relays and a new ECM.
I also need to know how to find and pull the ECM for a 1989 corvette. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is my first time back to the forum since two open heart surgeries. I hope my car problems don't stress me out too much. By the way everything I have checked thus far has been a result of much reading of late on the forum. But I am a little worried about letting a mechanic I am not familiar with "tear down my engine" without first eliminating the Emissions, ECM and Sensor stuff first. Bye the way what is limp home mode and how do you get rid of it.?? Has anyone out there also heard of something called "fuel hammer". This car also stinks of fuel when it is running now.
This car also had a prior history of cutting out and restarting at odd times now and then. Other than that it ran great before yesterday, smooth idle, quick start, power, good mileage (25 on highway) at 70 mph. Sorry for the long-winded Post but I am desperate.
Did you try using one of those engine stethoscopes to listen ?Can't help with the ECM for sure but I think it in the pass side dash area not sure though.Mabey it is a broken valve spring? I don't think a MAF problem will cause 1 cylinder to be wet.You can disconnect the MAF and it will run with out it to test it.How many miles?Stay calm some more knowledgable 89 owners will be by soon.
I did try the stethescope on the left bank valve cover since #1 wasnt firing and or was wet. When it was running I couldn't hear any unusual valve train noise accross the valve cover front to back. The car will not start without the MAF disconnected. Thanks for your prompt suggestions and interest.
