I'm finishing the rebuild of my new 'vette motor
The crank is a stock high mileage crank - all the journals are still within factory spec, however the old rear mean seal wore a groove into the back of the crank
My machinist wants to cut 1 rib off the new rear main seal. Does anyone know where I can get a rear main seal that rides on a different spot on the crank than the original one?

That would make me dubious of your machinist. See if there's a replacement seal available that comes with a wear sleeve.
Corteco (Detroit Gasket) has the rear main seal for the late SB's. It has an offset designed into it. The part number is 17275. Thanks, Gary in N.Y.
P.S. If you can't get it locally, contact me. I'm on the island.
