Code 601??? HELP
I used one of those cheap Autozone ActronII scanners to pull a PO601 code. It is an Int Module Check Sum Error... but the car runs like a raped ape. Exactly what can cause this? Is the PCM fried? If it is fried, why does the car run so damn well? The tune is stock... car is stock... car is 96 LT4.

I did clear the codes... both by unhooking the battery and by clearing it with the ActronII scanner. Each time as soon as the car was started, the code came back. If I didn't mention it in the first thread, the code was an integer ROM check sum error of some sort. I just don't know what that means.

As far as I know, it's a not a phantom code, but the ECM recognizing that it's broken. ECM monitors internal memory, circuits and outputs as a self check. All of the trouble charts I've seen for the low 600's (though I haven't seen one for your '96) say to capture data via a scan tool and if it doesn't pick up on anything, disconnect and reconnect the ECM and then plug it back in. If the code remains, replace the ECM. You might want to check warranty, though I believe the Fed Statute for a '96 is 8/80K.
