Dear Friends,
As I was driving my beautiful '91 C4 to work the other day the transmission was acting up, and I am not too well educated on trannys so I was thinking one of yall could help me out!
Here is the probelem: out of first gear the engine wraps up to about 4,800-5,500rpm before it shifts when it does shift it makes a huge bang sound and the car jolts.I never took it out of second gear in fear of what might have happend. The fluids are fine, does anyone have a recommendation?
Could be a broken 1-2 accumulator spring. Drop the pan, pull the filter, remove the 1-2 housing and inspect the spring. I believe you have a green spring.
Make sure the TV cable is set properly. Do NOT manipulate the TV cable to change the nature of the shifts. Just make sure it is set to specs. Then you can pull the governor and check the driven gear and the governor for stiffness or stickiness in general. Make sure the governor valve is free, while you are in there.
How long have you had the car?It could be a shift kit in the tranny. Is it different under light, medium, WO throttle?if it is the same at all throttle positions see above.

Nah sounds to me like he is refering to a shift delay or flare up issue, in which case there is problems. Is this what you are talking about? As in does it free-rev between the 2 gears? If you drop the pan off and pull out the filter, replace with new filter and also new gasket, then cut your old filter open and see what's inside. Also check around the magnet in the base of the pan for metal particles.
My '84 does the same thing every once and a while. When it happens I turn off the engine and press the throttle to the floor 2 or 3 times and the trans. returns to normal. I must have a bad cable or sticky valve in the trans. My car had only been driven 2000 miles between 1999 and 2005 when I bought it.
I havent tried punching it, the car i've had for a while now, though I really never drive it. I don't have the time to work on it, which sucks because I have all Snap On tools so I would love to just don't have the time.
I am going to take it to a tranny place here this week and see what they have to say.
I had my tranny rebuilt and shortly thereafter this happened to me...turns out it was a tiny particle of "something" that was stopping the line pressure from getting high enough to allow the shift...once I got to 5000 rpm there was apparently enough pressure so it shifted, but really hard...btw, this happened to me at the drag strip and knocked me out of the event...made for a very interesting 150 mile ride home too...
I got lucky and the particle some how dislodged itself two weeks later, the very day I took it back to the tranny guy...he thought I was nuts because it shifted perfectly for him...lol...I had the fluid changed and a new filter put in anyway...good luck
