A friend called me today to ask about a problem with his trans on his 86. I have a fair amount of experiance with all generations of Corvettes but had never heard about this problem.
Seems that his OD selector switch on the top of the shifter needed replaced so he had a local shop (well versed in Corvette) change it out. It worked fine for a day or two. Push the button once...and it switched on...push it again and it switched off.
He changed the battery and within a day of driving the car it now requires that you push the button TWICE before it will switch the OD on or off.
You can push it quick like double clicking a mouse or push it once....wait several minutes...then push it again. Either way it now takes hitting the button twice to turn it on or off.
Is there something that he maybe did when changing the battery???
Is this something the the computer can learn / unlearn??
My first thought was to just unhook the battery for a while and then see if it goes back to the one click on / off.
Anyone had anything similar happen??
ANY ideas??
I will keep you posted if unhooking the battery changed anything.
Maybe the switch in the shifter is need of adjustment. When the shifter **** is removed you have to count how many turns the "T" bolt was turned before it became unscrewed. The relay may be going south also. Have him switch the fuel pump relay and the OD relay around to see if that cures it. Tell him to take a close look at the connectors to these relays also. The insulation shrunk back close to an inch on all wires on mine.
What year is his car? The 86-88 models used a momentary switch, while 84/85 did not. If the shop put a standard type switch in there, it would cause this problem on a year that is supposed to have a momentary.
The switch that belongs in there is an Alco MPA106F and can be bought from Mouser (electronic parts house) and their part number is 506MPA 106F, cost is $12.80. You can order on line from www.mouser.com .
The price from GM quoted from a CFer awhile back will put the fear of God into you.

Since 84/85 has the switch on the dash, I wouldn't expect it'd even be a close match... do they actually look the same?

But even if a late 85 had it in the shifter, it'd operate like the 86+ ones, right? They changed switches when they changed locations... although he doesn't say which year this concerns. Maybe if it was a late 85 then they did get the wrong switch.
