My search is over. I finally closed the deal on a 94 C4. I am picking it up next Friday.
Couple quick questions. Against my better judgement, I am flying to the car and driving it 800 miles home.
The owner states the cruise control needs a vacuum pump. Is this common, could it be something simple I can fix easily before the trip.
It would be nice to have for the ride.
Also he says the CD player does not work, and the washer fluid pump does not work. Being my first Vette I am not in touch with there quirks, but I am finding alot of info on this site.
Ask him why he thinks it needs a new vacuum pump. It may be as simple as a vacuum leak somewhere that connects in w/ the vacuum pump.
As for the CD - ask him what exactly it does. Does it take the cd and just not read it/give an error on read or does it not even take the cd. May just need the lense cleaning w/ a cleaning disk if it won't read.
Washer fluid pump may just be a bad fuse or a bad electrical connection if indeed it is the pump and not the switch or the hose w/ a leak somewhere.
Bottom line- get more details on all the problems and why he thinks these are the solutions.
Check the little vacuum and all the hoses that are attached to the passenger's side fuel rail, underneath the Corvette plastic cover. When I had to replace the vacuum, it cost me a few bucks, and about five minutes of my time.

Calm down my young Patawan learner. I did this in March of '03 with the same problems. Flew to Houston, drove car home 1,300 miles. No problems! Took lost of pics!
My cruise did not work, my washers did not work. I later found that a mouse had chewed through a hose in each system. Just traced the hoses until I found the breaks which were both near an end. Cut off an inch or so and reattached. Works fine - freebie fix!
The main reason I did the fly/drive was that my wife predicted financial disaster due to a possible long tow and repairs. Nah Nah Nah - your were wrong (this time).
If you stop at a motel on the way home be sure to park where you can see it from your room. You WILL wake up at least once during the night to check on her. Don't ask how I know.
Oh yeah, make sure the owner has an oil change done for you before your trip.
Also, I'm not sure if it's the same, but the cruise control on my 87 is controlled by a chain. When I bought my vette, the cruise control didn't work...turns out, the chain was broken. Went and got a ceiling fan chain, cheap fix!
On my 92, one of the hoses for the cruise was pinched against the battery and had rubbed a hole in it. 3 bucks for new hose and the cruise has worked without further incident.
Thanks all !!!!! I was planning on spending the day in town with the car going over it a bit, and like Corvette said, make sure it has a fresh oil change.
Fly/drive was a financial reason for me also. I think I got a good deal on this car, and I want to keep track of ALL expences in it in case I decided to sell for a C5,,,,,,,,,, I think Im really going to lke this car though !!!!!!!!
Vet Head,Im sure your right for the first few hundred miles, but its approx a 13 hour trip,,,,,,,, Im sure Ill want to zone out somewhere along the line !!!!!!!!
Did I mention.........800 miles ON THE SAME HIGHWAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Will do,THANKS !!!!! 800 miles and no cruise doent sound very inviting !!!!!!!
Every Corvette has cruise control. It is called WOT. Push the pedal as far forward as it will go and cruise. Makes for an exciting ride. Good luck, welcome and have a safe trip.
Say I did the same as you last March. I flew 1000 miles to get my car and then drove it home. It was a fantastic experience. I took my sone with me to share the driving.
If there is any chance at all that you will incounter rain be sure to put a new set of wiper blades on the car. No telling when that was last done.
Best of luck and be sure to let us know how everything turns out.
Congrats on your 94. Welcome to the forum. Let us know how the trip back went. Oh, and watch out for those hose eating mice.
Joe B.
congrats!!! When I bought my '95 about a year ago, I bought it sight unseen(except for pics) and had it shipped on a truck fron Houston to Austin. I simply did not have the time to go down, look it over, negotiate, etc. etc.
I was lucky, the car was in excellent condition as described....
Welcome to the fun...best of luck on your 800 mile cruise, a great way to get to know the new love of your life...hehe heh...hope she doesn't "talk back" on the way home...
You don't need no stinkin' cruise, your first Vette you'll probably not listen to the radio that much either. As you will be listening to the sound of this Vette and the road passing by underneath, and feeling every breath it takes through the accelerator pedal.
Yeah hard to say on the owner dianosis of the vacuum. Although I believe it's located in the cubby hole under the driver's head lamp. Could just be a hose I'd be interested to know why the owner said that.
On the CD the Delco/Bose is infamous for the CD unit failing. Give Dr. Don a call when you get back, he's one of the best for stereo repairs (consider the new CD mechanism upgrade I did, no skips better sampling). http://www.doctordons.com/
Your AM/FM will probably still be working fine.
As far as quirks, you'll just have to learn yours. Each of them have their own personalities.
I cant thank you guys enough for the early help and words of encouragement.
I feel I bough the car at a perfect time. I get to put some miles on it, then get it in my shop and take the winter to get it right for next summer !!!!!!!!
CD upgrade sounds like a great winter project !!!!!! Ill be sending it out soon.
Good luck with your new car.I envy you the 800 mile trip.I bought my `96 about a month ago and I can`t get enough drive time, and with winter coming on ....well you know.
