I have a hard start issue with my '85. When cold it starts on the first crank. About 15-30 minutes after it has been fully heated at operational temperatures, it will crank a little longer and runs like it is flooded. I have to kick the throttle a bit and then it idles fine. Is this a sign of leaking injectors????
When I had the hard start (hot) problem with leaking Injectors, the car started after a long crank and ran fine. Never had problem of it runs like it is flooded. I never step on the throttle either, just had to crank it a few times until the car started.
Take the plugs out after an hour of driving, any of them is wet then that injector is leaking.
I, too, have an '85 4+3 65k. Shortly after purchase, I noticed that NO maintenance was ever done, except oil changes. Everything else was original and untouched.
I experience some of the same issues that you do with starting at different temperatures. (See my thread.) Even though it runs well at all temperatures, I think I have a leaky injector as well. I'll be having them rebuilt ($120) instead of replacing them ($300++) since Bosch injectors are well regarded. See which ones you think are leaky! I'm also going to clean the plenum and runners while I have them off. New Adj Fuel Pressure Regulator, too.
To answer your question-it sounds like leaky injector(s) you can get a fuel pressure guage and hook it up to the schrader valve-turn the ignition on and after the pressure comes up watch how long it takes to drop-if it drops rather quickly that will answer your question.
The FP goes does relatively slowly, but I know that it should hold steady for at least 15-30 minutes after shut down. My system is depressured with 10-15. I did conduct the fuel line supplys and return test by pinching them after pressurizing they system. I thought the check valve in the pump was going, so I replaced it. I am leaning (not riching - dumb joke) on the leaking injectors. Cruz Performance I hear is pretty good
I just sent my 86's injectors off to Rich at Cruzin Performance this morning. I have taken a bunch of photos of the removal process. If you have any questions about how to pull them, feel free to PM me.
Rich has been very easy and polite to work with so far.
(edit) Sorry, I just saw that you have a modded motor including a base manifold. If you are unfamiliar with how to pull the injectors, please feel free to PM me. :o
