This topic comes up a lot. Do a search here and you will find people who swear by GM, Castrol, Redline, and others. Personally, I have been using Redline MTL in mine and it has been great.

It is probably more important to change the oil every 15,000 miles than what you actually put in it. Change it even more often if you drive the car hard. I change mine once a year along with the diff fluid and the PS fluid.

Cheers,

Lawrence

And don't forget to flush the Brake Fluid.

From above sticky:
ZF 6spd - The GM oil (available from GM with part number 1052931) and the Castrol Synthetic Formula TWS 10W60 (available from BMW with part number 0751009420). Other types have been used/suggest/recommended, including ATF, but the Forum concensus is that the two listed above are the SAFEST solutions.

Do a search, there has been a ton of threads on this in the ZR-1 section.
Be careful with the Redline. Quite a few transmission failures with it.
