Default mass air flow problem

my lt4 starts right up then dies @ 2-3 seconds later. wont idle, plugs are black!!! if i hold the revs up @3000 and try and take off, as soon as i let the clutch out and put a load on the motor it dies.
i pulled the connector on the maf and it starts right up and idles perfect
i went and drove it and its perfect.
is it normal for the maf to go out. its the factory GM maf from 96.
any thoughts.....

also, i pulled codes before i unpluged it, and it showed no codes.

Another GS owner
I don't know if this even helps. I encountered a problem with my fairly stock GS.
I had the screens off my MAF and installed Hypertech Programming.
When I first started my car and backed out of the driveway (cold) the car would hesitate (small backfire) and stall. It did set a code for the MAF (i think it was low MAF voltage or something~ long time ago).
I pulled out the High performance tuning of the Hypercrap I mean Hypertech. And the car has been fine for several years now.
I'm sure you have done mods to your stock ECM. I wonder if that me be the reason the ECM isn't setting a code?

Sure MAF's go bad and black plugs signal too rich a mixture. Get a new or rebuilt MAF and also check the fuel pressure on the shraeder valve at the end of the fuel rail. Turn the ignition on for more than 2 seconds and then off and see how long it takes for the fuel pressure to drop. If it drops rapidly, you likely have leaky injector/s causing too rich mixture. Replace injectors if the pressure drop is NOT from the check valve in the fuel line.

Nods, it's the MAF...

Been there done that, they do see more robust than the earlier Bosch models...

That is about right price wise....

I was having the same problems on my 86'. same exact symptoms, everyone told me for sure it was fuel injectors, It turned out the tps need to be replaced and then the computer just needed to be started back up again. No more probs for me as far as starting. just check that before you spend $$$.

I agree everyone here has great advice , but just use it as a guide.I was having problems & 70% said it was the opti , turned out it was a O2 sensor. You can go to your local parts store & get a mass for about 130.00 .( Advance Auto ) GOOD LUCK!!!

Do they require a core? How much higher is the price without a core?

Are yo using a K&N or other oiled filter?
The oil can coat on the filaments and result in false readings.
Try cleaning your MAF first.
Don't touch the filaments....
Spray it with some carb choke &throttle body cleaner or some brake cleaner or some electrical contact cleaner .... let it dry and then plug it back in...
good luck
