Help New Tranny!
I just had my transmission worked on they want $1,600.00 to replace the clutches, so I might as well just buy a new one.
Does anyone have a cheap idea where I can get a 700r4?
Thanks,
Bill
Check out E bay, there are a couple of people there that sell rebuilts, one in NC and another in FL. I bought one from the guy in NC for the wife's Formula Firebird and it works great (was $825 for a heavy duty, shipping included).
RACE ON!!!
. You do not want to put in someone elses used junk, unless you just went for a ride with that tranny and you know its good. The clutches wear just like brakes but should last longer than brake pads unless you abuse it (like I have been accused of doing). If you have had junk running through your tranny, which is why your having it rebuilt, a good shop (even the dealer) will reccommend a new torque convertor. This is because the junk hides in the TC, and will come out into your new tranny and clog the little holes that make it work. If you are selling the car right away, put a used tranny in and hope for the best. After several GM trannies covered under warranty and one that was NOT. I went and bought the most expensive one I could find with all the upgrades. Kevlar Clutches, bigger pump, Heavy duty brazed Torque Convertor (higher stall too). I got it from www.levelten.com. CORVETTE 81-92 4L60 (700R4) STAGE 3 PTS BILLET TORQUE CONVERTER GM310B-9730S3 $800.00
PTS BULLET PROOF TRANSMISSION GM1800-9000S3 $2245.00
CORE 500.00 and thats not installed.
There is also a company called Raptor Trannies, as well as Art Carr, and Bowtie. One forum poster even has one in his garage for $200 in California on the forsale section tonight. You could also check with the corvette club in Dallas and ask for reccomendations locally. Hopefully you are not in an AMCO or Julios or Juans tranny shop. Good luck, tranny repairs are expesive, no matter what car you drive.
