Default Changing rear gears

I have 1986 vette with the stock gears in back and would like to upgrade to a 3.73, has anyone done this and how much did it cost to have it done at the shop?

In an automatic? I'd advise against it. L98 requires nothing lower than 3.07.
Even if you change the intake to Superram.

You'll lose what top end you have.

what if your car has decent ported heads with a Hot Cam and go through the traps (1/4) at 4500 rpm, could it use more gear than 3.07?

The cam and heads would call for a bit more gear, but its the TPI intake thats still going to limit the combination. So no, you wouldnt benefit from changing gears.

if you're going through the traps at 4500 in your drive gear, and i am assuming this is a l98 motor, then you are right there. no more gear required.

And at that point, we're talking about a different engine and not an L98 anymore.

I put a Richmond 3.73 in my Dana 44, but have not built the motor yet. It will not be stock or a TPI but some thing else that revs. It took me along time to get it right, and every time you take it apart to redo all the adjustments on the pinion, ring gear, and every thing else you run the risk of damaging parts. I would definitely not recommend that you do this unless you have been turning wrenches all your life. You can get them for about $1500 + core charge. I spent about $400 in parts and tools (I made most of my own tools to do it). If I had to buy the GM tools I probably would have spent more than $1500
