Only the later C4s can be programed in the car (I know the 95s and 96s can maybe the 94s but I am not sure) . On the earlier cars you will have to have a chip burner. I have a 95 so have don't have to burn chips.

However, I use two programs for my tuning. Datamaster as a datalogger and Tuner Cat to program my car. If you post your questions in scan and tune, the guys that will get you squared away. Scan and Tune has a Tuning FAQ that has a lot of good info.

I bought my cable from these guys check out the link and their service was great.

Mike

'94 also does have flash ROM in the ECM.

Be well,

Thanks,
that brings me to my next question. The OBDII computers from the later c4's, can they be swapped into the earlier ones?

Default ecm swap

No you can not swap out a earlier ecm for a later one unless you rewire the engine control harness etc. This would be too much work! You would be better off installing a stand alone ecm such as a gen 7+ or a fast system then you could program any engine parameters you need. good luck!

For L98, you have to buy aftermarket equipment in order to tune on the fly.

94 to 96 flash computers.TTS and Tuner cats for those.
You could burn your own chip for your car but you will have a fortune in the equipment.
I figure about 2 grand .
I spent about 700 all said and done for my 94 in programs, equipment.
If you want to change computers eather the gen 7 new system not the old one.Or fast like the other form member said.

To answer your question, Yes. Tuner Cat is a well known program to change the parameters in your ECM's chip. There are others as well. Then you should have diagnostic software so that you can monitor your engines behavior before/after changes. Datamaster is one of these diagnostic programs as well as Diacom and there are even some freeware. You also need a "prom" burner such as a Pocket Programmer and a reusable chip such as a 29c256. Then to put the aftermarket prom in your ECM you need an adapter such as the ones from Moates. This uses your memcal and your new chip. If you have a laptop or can borrow one, it isn't as much as some may say. There are many many options and the ones I've mentioned are just some that I use reliably. There are more expensive/easier ways, like tuning on the fly!

Tuner Cat $69.95 or/and 30 days free
Tuner Cat Def file $8D $20

TTS Data Master DM32x8D $119 or/and 20 free runs

Cables
ALDL $39.95 never tried um.
AKM $90.00
TTS $100

Xtronics Pocket Programmer $150

Moates Adapter ~$20

EEPROM ~$5.00 each

There, that should give ya something to run with. Good Luck!

Hey, WADR, it'd be nice if you'd give a little more background on your capabilities---are you a tech person, good at wrenching your car, both, just a driver? I see very little in your bio, matter of fact, not even region of country where you live.
