It is possible to use 6th provided you have the right power, although i wouldn't recommend doing it to often, because i don't think the 6th gear will last too long. Oh yes and my rear is still standard 3.45

You must have had an ample amount of power @ 4300 rpms. 190 mph or 304 kmh is flying!! Have you broke 322 kmh/200 mph yet??

There is one vid on my site www.baldturbofreak.com it's under my car in the projects section. It was when I had the stock shortblock running 6-9psi

God! That car is brutally fast. After you ran through that light, it looked like "Pod Racing." You camera man was flippin'! How fast did you take it in that vid?? Any recent vids after that oil explosion??

After the mods etc and extra rpm the goal is 350km/h, but it's tough to get there. The wind resistance at that speed is crazy. But i can tell you one thing, the Vette is dead stable at that speed, it felt like i was cruising at 120km/h

Prolonged running in 6th is risky unless you put some coolers on the tranny. The tranny can be burnt up at those internal speeds.

Interesting... Is the heat build-up problem due to things turning too slowly in the case to circulate enough oil over the gears and bearings to cool them?

Top speed in a stock LT1/LT4 is achieved in 5th gear.
You can increase your max speed in 6th by going to 4.10 gears, but that will drop your true top speed (in 5th).
Nitrous will not be any more harmfull to the engine in sixth than in any other gear, but that is probably a moot point, since you should never be in sixth when you trigger nitrous...not only is it not going to give you max acceleration (the reason for nitrous in the first place), but the ZF will not tolerate high torque loads in sixth (so I've heard).

Top speed in 6th is 250ish, assuming you can push about 700 hp at 5700 RPM (and you'll need about that much hp all the way down). But that's a dreaming number.

Well sort of both, the strech is about 4km's or so, so it's pretty far. The 300km/h though was reached in under 2km's. But i agree with scorp and rocco, running so hard in 6th is risky, the gear was not designed for it, and i'm pretty sure i remember chatting to someone who was telling me that the 6th gear is not built as strong as the other 5. I'm just going to see what i can get, and leave it at that. I don't want to push my luck with that gear too often. The thing is with a cenrifugal blower, the power is a gradual increase with RPM. I don't know how well the gear would take the strain of a sudden boost of torque with the NOS.

Here's a thought, what gearbox did the Callaway SledgeHammer use? That Vette hit around the 407km/h mark

Something else i was just thinking about, is how strong is your clutch plate? The clutch may give in before 6th ever will

getting the correct info on the sledgehammer is tough. I have read several articles, even 2 on the callaway cars page that has mismatched info on it. from what I have read I think it was a doug nash 5 speed, but dont know the ratio on 5th. and a overdrive on top of it.

I think lingenfelters tt are doing 223 in 5th with 2.73 gears as well.

no one who is well beyond 200 mph is pulling 6th with a .50 OD.
maybe on a custom tranny talored to make 6th gear more usable.

I know rick doria was on team Zr1 looking around to find someone to build a custom gear set for a ZF 5th and 6th gear to make that tranny more usable for him.

Kim baker had a c4 back in the day doing about 230 with an 800 hp big block. he ran down to 200 mph on 7 cylinders. I dont think he was pulling 6th either.

as far as running nitrous on the top of fifth. I read some post many years ago about a guy who did this on his ZR1, he had a back fire and it shredded his air box. he said he got away lucky and was able to drive home. that made me think real hard about what nitrous would do in 5th.

bottom line, if your looking for top speed, lots of power and gearing. forget about 6th. I have heard lots of talk for something like 6 years where people thought they were going to make 6th gear turn, but most post the car slows down.

You would definately need some uber torque and power to pull past 200 mph on 6th. How about a pump gas version of this motor:

760 cubic inch big block Chevy, aka The 760 Commander.
