yesterday i attacked the job of replacing the u-joints on my rear. thanks to the forum it turned out to be a pretty easy job. took about 6-7 hours to do but it all turned out good.
here is the surprising part. when i got the old left outside joint off (it was suspected of making a lot of noise) i pulled it apart and one cup had NO grease in it and a washboard style pattern on the spider. and even worse was that there were no needles in another cup just a fine powder they also had some heat discoloration.
this got me wondering too things
1. what condition are the driveshaft u-joints in?
2. why is it proper to get ones without zerk fittings?
the coment i heard most from the people at the shop i was working in was "thats a short driveshaft you got there"
The reason most folks will tell you to get the ujoints without zerk fittings is because the holes that are drilled to provide passage for the grease ,weakens the ujoint. In a high performance car like these you want the ujoints as strong as they can be. Besides, properly lubricated solid ujoints should last a long time. If it was a Mustang you were working on, The zerk type ujoints would be fine!
2. The driveshaft joints last almost forever. There is nearly no way the shaft can move around (other than spin) because the C beam keeps it in a steady position.
