Default electrical problem

Can anyone help me? I have a 1995 Corvette with 40,000 miles. When I turn the headlights on the radio display is blanked and the radio buttons are not functional. The radio continues to operate in the mode it was in when the lights went on. When I turn the lights off everything goes back to normal. The radio is original and has a single CD player too.

The radio display brightness is controlled by a dimmer circuit that gets info from the variable resistor that is a part of the headlight switch. You might want to first try rotating the headlight switch when the headlights are on to see if you can brighten the radio display. If not, the variable resistor and associated dimmer circuit is where your problem lies.

Thanks.

I did adjust the brightness while the lights were on and no change to the radio dispaly. The green leds on the radio are out and the display is blank, although the orange backlight is on.

Is the dimmer circuit you spoke of part of the radio? How do I access this, or is it just too much trouble?

I don't know where it is on a 95. On my 87 the dimmer circuit is on one of the cluster circuit boards. Very unlikely that its in the radio.
