My 86 L98 is getting an intermittent SES Code 36 for the past 6 months. I've replaced both Relays (MAF & MAF burn-off circuit) and I'm still getting the code. The cars seems to drive fine with or without the code. I've stopped checking the code now. If I check for the code the car won't idle after checking the code. You start it and it runs for a second then dies, unless you have your foot on the gas. I can drive it that way for about 10 minutes. 1 foot on the gas and 1 on the brake after about 15 minutes it will idle like normal and no problems unless I check the code again. so when the SES light comes on I just assume it's code 36 and will go away soon. Any ideas?
Have you looked inside the MAF itself to see if the burn off wire glows or is broken?
When you shut the car off,the MAF burn off wire will glow a few seconds to burn off any crap that may have gotten on the wire.To do this, run the car with the MAF disconnected from the air filter housing...then have someone shut off the car while you look inside the MAF sensor and see if it lights up in there.
You may also have a bad MAF sensor as well.Another possibility can be a bad ecm as well.Start with the simple stuff first.
Does sound like a bad MAF itself, but you'll want (considering the cost of the thing) to be certain before throwing a new one at it. The troubleshooting steps in the Helms book are the way to do it...
There have been two posts similar to this regarding the MAF code, at least one of those turned out to be caused by a faulty FP relay. Read your Helms carefully-especially the part that says the MAF receives its voltage "through control of the FP relay". I'm not saying this is your problem-but it's aleast something you can look at, and alot of us here have found the wire insulation to the relay has shrunk back exposing bare wires (mine were actually touching-surprised I didn't have a fire).
Good Luck
