Does anyone here now much about the fiberglass springs we have in our cars? I have a fellow CF members car in my shop right now and it was shipped from So Cal. During the trip the rear spring was possibly damaged by the shipped. The spring was "dented" on both sides of the pumpkin, not really deep but its about the size of a quarter and perhaps .060" deep into the glass. Any opinions as to if this kind of damage can have any effect on the spring as far as causing it to fail? It is deep enough that the white fiberglass is showing, just as if you whacked it with a hammer.
I know it did the thing no good. I would do a claim myself. I know where you can get a spring. Airport in Salem will have one. Thanks for the use of that shop the other day Tom.
I have a stock leaf spring with a "chip" in it. A piece of fibergalss the size of a straw is split. It hasn't traveled on me so I'm hoping the spring is ok. Seems like they are pretty easy to swap out.
From what I've read on here, anything that damages the outer layer is not good. I would make a claim with the shipper ASAP.
I just had a conversation the other day with my vette mechanic he stated that ANEY nick or scrape makes the spring junk it may not come apart right away but he said it will come apart.
I agree I would start looking for another.
I was guilty of doing alot of cleaning to my suspension (rear) and used a pretty stout aluminum acid....then did some polishing.
It wasn't long(couple of weeks) and I noticed the drivers side was sitting lower than the rest of the car.
The chemical I used ate the outer coating of the spring away and it ended up splitting the spring.
