Default Engine Pull

Well I have most of my accessories off the front of my engine. All but the balancer at least. Is it worth to pull the tranny out too? or can i just pull the engine out without the tranny. By looking in there, it doesnt seem like there's alot of room to pull the engine forward then lift it out. Boy i thought by the looks of this there would be tons of room to work with, but after spending some time in the engine bay, i came to the conclusion its fricken cramped in there.

I unbolted my automatic transmission on mine. I even left the front accessories on too. But I need to take of the headers.

Take the wiper motor out , gives more room and prevents damaging it as the engine comes out.
Needs very little foward movement to get it to come straight up

Automatic or manual? It should be do-able either way but especially with an auto, the engine doesn't have to come forward very far to clear after it's unhooked from the bellhousing and converter. Don't forget to support the front of the trans.

I use the bolt holes in the heads front and back to bolt chain.

If you have a TPI setup you can just wrap a stong strap around the middle section of the intake plentum and pull it that way

Your"e kidding right A Strap around the Plenum? That will hold the weight? Does the Balancer need to come off also?

I pulled my engine in my 89 recently. I went to horbor Freight and bought a cheap trans jack, and an adjustable sling. Left the trans (6 sp.) on the jack, and the sling can be adjusted to change the pitch of the motor. Worked great and made life a lot easier. I was working by myself. I put new water pump, balancer, plugs, wires on the new motor while it was on the engine stand. Invest in the adjustable sling. Trust me.
Good wrenching!

i pulled mine out with out the tranny but with all the front pulleys alt, a/c ect. couldnt get the power stiring high pressure hose loose ended up cutting it. but my best advice to you is get a digital camera and take lots of pics befor, during and after. it will help you more than you know when not only getting all the brackets bolted back up but for wiring as well. plus it makes for a good slide show when all is said and done.

If he's not kidding - he's dangerous, destructive and/or rich!

When I pulled mine - I used drivers side front bolt and passenger side rear - It went easy (I did use the Harbor freight levelor)

I suppose that wrapping a strap around the plenum would work, but I can PROMISE you that you will NEVER see that done in my shop.

There are PLENTY of places on that engine where you can use a short piece of chain as a sling chain and use a few head bolts or manifold bolts. A couple of feet of tempered 3/8" chain at the hardware store will only cost you a few bucks. Make sure your bolts are long enough to get five or six threads at a minimum.

If you are going to pull engines very often, you can get one of the adjustable bars for not too much money and they are GREAT to have around. They work especially well if you are like me and prefer to leave the transmission in place rather than pull the engine/trans as a unit.

As far as whether to pull the engine only or all of it as a unit goes, it's kind of "six of one and a half a dozen of the other." In some cases I will pull the trans with the engine if; the trans needs to be replaced or rebuilt at the same time, or if the particular car warrants it. There are some cars that are just more of a pain to get everything disconnected from the trans than it is to remove the engine to trans bolts. I can also see that for the DIYer it would be determined by the particular equipment you have access to.

Good luck,
