Thanks for all the replies guys. I believe I put a fail-safe open stat in a few years back. When I get a few minutes, I will have to change it out with a new one. Thanks for your help. As always, I appretiate it. Thanks!

If it isn't at least partially open when you remove it from the engine, TEST it before you throw money at it.

I think that CFI and myself share the same frustration in seeing so many parts replaced as shotgun troubleshooting, rather than testing or inspecting them first.

Have a great day,

Although I have to admit many parts, the Opti in particular, has been replaced without proper troubleshooting, this case is different.

We're talking about the potential for a thermostat being stuck open. The test there would be to remove it and see if it's open. If it's closed when you take it out, what is there to test? Obviously it's not stuck closed because the car isn't overheating.

You stick it in a pot of water on your stove with a thermometer in it, and observe the temp at which it opens. Nine times out of ten, if it isn't partially open upon removal, it's OK. In this case the stat IS bad, and it WILL be, at least, partially open. The test really wouldn't be necessary, but some people may be hesitant to reinstall it without some reassurance.

I did this same test, and my old one was still open...new one was put in and problem is solved. Heats up much quicker now and stays around 180.

Oh trust me, I agree. It doesn't cost anything to test it, it's quick enough, and it's good insurance. Being lazy though you could use logic to bypass the test. Now if the car was overheating then by all means you would want to test it before you just stuck it back in there.

Good observation. I did exactly the same thing when diagnosing my temp issue, stat vs sensor. Stat was stuck wide open. Replaced with Stant Superstat 195. Problem solved.
