I drive my 96 auto CE along at 30 mph and then put it to the floor . The car will downshift and the car will pull right to 6 grand(quickly) and it will stay at 6 grand(I assume in 3rd gear) for probably 3 seconds. Long enough that I get kinda worried and let off and let it shift and floor it again. Is this normal? If I don't let up it will shift, I just don't want to smoke my motor. What do you guys think?
At 30 mph it is probably going back into 1st for a bit then into "second" and it should do this ok on it's own.........but I wouldn't do it all the time, hard on the car and you have a Dana36 rear end........which is weaker than the Dana44.........at higher speeds when you depress the gas, you will go into second or third gear, which is not such a slam to the drive train.........the AT have a very "LOW" first gear....... Also having a 96, you can reprogram the trans shift points.....
If you have 2.59s, it seems to stay between 5500-6000 for a while, but not 3 seconds. I get a little anxious waiting for the shift also. It should shift by itself. The tach may not be too accurate, but the computer will be.
Anything under 45-50 mph when floored will go to first. The second-third shift happens at about 105.
If something is really wrong, You may have ignition or other problems that prevent you from reaching the shift point or someone may have used a programmer to change your shift points.
I think you hit the nail on the head olephart when you said anxiuos when waiting for the shift. That is how I shouldve worded it. I am used to my 84 which is a lot lower Rpm car. And no I probably shouldnt do that very often.
