I have a 86 vette and a couple of weaks ago I took out my m.a.f.s. to clean it and when I did I broke the wire inside. I bought another one from advanced auto but it is a cheap one. I would like to have my stock m.a.f.s. rebuilt or have the wire replaced does anyone know if and were this can get done ?
I dont know if thats something you can do yourself. Some of the rebuilt units are ACDelco(just bought a reman Delco from Autozone) and works fine. About $178 out the door w/exchange.
I've only read one post from a guy who claimed to have repaired his broken wire. I really doubt that a broken wire can be repaired by anyone not knowing the in's-and out's, by that I mean it has to be done by some company the specializes in doing it.
What I did when I had a broken wire on my 1986 MAF was to hit the wrecking yard, rather than pay the high price for a replacement. Over three years now and not a single problem with it. I figure it's the best $50 I've spent.
Also, you don't have to get one off a Vette. Many mid 80s cars came with the exact same MAF. Look for Camaros, Firebirds, Trans Ams, etc. The 350's all use the same MAF.
You can actually install it at the yard and if it works find, you'll be good-to-go; if not, get another one off another car. That's what I did. The yard supervisor marked it with a yellow marker, then I took it out and installed it. Fired the engine and it ran as smooth as before. I paid the $50 and drove off into the sunset as happy as a puppy eatin sh**.
For another $5 I got a 30 day exhange warranty; no refund, just exchange.
