It's the "blinking light" you should be watching. What we're talking about is the light that says Service Engine Soon (SES).

After you jump the A&B terminals on the ALDL and turn the ignition key to "ON" (do not start the engine) the SES will first blink code 12 - it will blink once, then there will be a short pause, then you'll see two quick blinks. Once, then twice; that is code twelve. It will blink code 12 a total of 3 times.

After that any stored error code will blink. Say the code is 34. The SES will blink three quick times, then a pause then four quick times, then a longer pause. This will repeat a total of 3 times.

Now the system will automatically go to the next stored error code if there is any. The same process will recur for this, and any other stored error codes.

Once all the codes have been displayed, the system will again blink code 12. Code 12 just tells you that the error code retrevial system is working, it doesn't mean there's an error associated with it.

Hope this helps,

Jakee

Is the Check Engine light even working? Does it come on when you insert the ignition key and turn it to the "On" position?

Some of the diagnostic programs, like Diacom will show any stored codes, at least on the 86 it will.

One of the larger auto parts stores, like AutoZone, advertise they can pull codes. Might want to give them a try.
