Default Is there a "consumer" Tech II?

I have a 96 c4 (obd II). The information I have is that the GM MAGNASTEER is adjustable to a certain degree using a GM TECH II tool.

I think they cost a couple of grand if you can find one. Does anyone know if a tool like Autoxray 4000 (or other) is the "equivalent" of Tech II and can do this particular adjustment?

TIA

Autoexray products are strictly scanning products. Ease at www.obd2.com has some software tools that will allow for the resetting or recalibration of some pcm and some drivetrain settings. I'm sure other forum members will have other sites that software that allow for resetting pcm settings but I don't know of many that will allow for resetting powertrain settings.

Personally I think the high price Vetronix charges for the Tech 2 scanner is designed to discourage do-it-yourselfers from fixing their own automobiles. They benefit and car repair shops and dealers benefit by effectively attempting to "lock out" people who can't afford their technology. The repair shops and dealers can easily absorb the prices of these scanners as a business expensive and over the life of the scan tool they recoup there original investment hundreds if not thousands of times over in labor cost they charge to customers.

However, the high prices also create a market for cheaper scanners like Actron and AutoXray products and many PC based software scan tools that in some cases are just as effective if not more so than a Tech 2 as helping you diagnose problems.

Vetronix charges over $3900 for the complete Tech2 package. I got mine via GM tools for just under $2400. However when you get it that way there is no software included. In other words the unit will be brain dead until you get it loaded up with software which can be done at a dealership. But you need to know someone at a dealer that will load the tool up. Otherwise you have a $2400 useless tool.

Some other laptop available tools may do what you need. EASE maybe one of them. I know Auto Tap does not. However even EASE is limited at best when it comes to doing what the TECH2 is capable of doing. For the cost of the EASE Software and what you want done, you may as well pay a dealer to do it for you. Or talk to the dealer tune up guy and bribe him personally with beer and pizza. Or a $20 spot, he may just do it for you in the parking lot.

I own a TECH2, if you were close lunch would be enough I have one because I own a dyno tuning shop so I use the tool all the time. I also use Datamaster for the older stuff, adn I have Diacome plus as well. Some use EASE, I personally don't use it.

I have a Tech I, and a Tech II - and 99% of the time I use my red brick snap-on for diagnostic work. I've found I only need the factory-tool only data in rare circumstances.

You can get a red brick (MT2500) with software on ebay for pretty cheap...Less than $500.
