Default 95 auto shift button sticks--update?

I got my 95 vette about month ago. One problem I am having trouble diagnosing is that occassionally the shifter button won't depress to let me get it out of park. Shop manual doesn't help (or I can't read the manual). Any suggestions?

Ok, since posting this I pulled the console cover and got access to the shifter mechanism. Everything appears in good working order and well greased up. There is what appears to be a solenoid (two wires) associated with the shift/lock release. When it does release the solenoid shaft extends along with the shift plate/lever (whatchamacallit). Same watchamacallit has cable that goes around to
a linkage under dash and by top of steering column.

If anyone can tell me what the 'solenoid' and cable do I can probably figure it out from there. If key on, brake depressed is supposed to activate the solenoid then I have an intermittent problem with the solenoid. Or does the cable do the work and 'solenoid' does something else?

Hope someone can help, it sure would be appreciated.
