Default console cover mess

Okay, I've really done it this time. My console cover was scratched up and the plastic coating is very soft and easy to scratch. I started sanding it with hopes of using spray plasikote but this stuff if more like sanding on rubber. I sprayed some adhesion sealer on it and it is now a gooey mess. How do I get this back to bare plastic? I saw the tech tip but this is going the wrong way?
thanks

Look on the bright side--your drinks won't fall out of the cup holder. Read the can of what you sprayed on it for clean-up instructions. Paint thinner or acetone will remove most adhesives, but read the can first and remember both are highly flammable. Once you get the adhesive off do what I did to clean it--send the wife off shopping and put the console (minus switches) in the dishwasher (no heat dry) while she's gone. Goo Luck to You.

Let the gooey mess dry. There is nothing you can do about that now and adding any more chemicals is only going to worsen the situation.

Once the gooey mess gets hard again try sanding it with 400 grit sand paper. If that only clogs or isn't agressive enough to break the surface try 320, then 220. I have to believe that 220 will surface the gooey mess. Once the gooey mess is pretty well smooth switch to the next higher grit (if you were using 220 go to 320, of 320 go to 400 etc) in the end you want to have the piece nice and smooth using 600 grit paper. Then you should be ready to respray.

Thanks, I'll give it a try tomorrow and see what happens. THe previous owner must have used a lot of armor all or something because the original coating is very soft. If this works I'll try the driver door handle area.

had the same type problem. You need to wash it VERY good with near straight dawn dish soap.

Then do like the others said, light sanding, wash again then paint, let set for a good day.

If it gets fish eyes, you did not wash it enough. Take your time and wash/soak it that is the key.

I followed the tech tip on this forum and mine looks great. I had to sand the "rubbery" coating off before I painted but it still looks great.
