Anyone know exactly what the solenoid in the shifter console does, and what activates it? I tried a thread 3days ago about shifter release button not wanting to depress so I can get the vette out of park, but got no response. Hopefully someone out there has run into this before and can help. ps--it always releases, but sometimes takes a little while, I have had console cover off and everything looks good and don't want to do exploratory surgery until I have better idea how things work in there.
aminnich.
I had this same problem. Stupid GM design. The solenoid got worse and worse. I felt like I was going to get a hernia in my wrist at times from trying to get the damn thing out of park. As the solenoid malfunction/wears out, the default is for it to not disengage as a lock, as opposed to it not locking. I suppose that's the reason to design the failure mode to stay stuck?
Get rid of the solenoid. You still need to depress the button to get it out of park, but you don't need to step on the brake to do it. It's a little kids safety feature, so if you've got little kids you're worried about popping the car out of gear when they're alone in the car with the key, you might not want to remove the solenoid. Personally, I don't let little kids (those that can't reach the brake pedal and press the button at the same time) in my car alone.
It's so nice to have the shifter work easily, and not worry about getting stuck in park anymore.
David, I pulled the solenoid out this morning. It only took about 1/2 hr to get it done and sure fixed the problem. It took a forum member to help out when the GM shop manual didn't.
Fantastic and Thanks Again, You ever come to Georgia the Beer is on me.

That is messed up!!!! I can get mine out of park WITHOUT pressing the brake!! Well, no one is gonna drive my Vette anyway, unless they try to steal it...
That makes sense, mine is 95. As David said "stupid engineering". Guess if kids drive vetts it would make some sense, but as they figure out things on computers that I can't they would probably figure out the brake interlock in about 2 minutes flat anyways and be gone cruising.
