Is this normal? My oil temp stays around 230 to 240 when I cruise around town for a while. But if I get on a freeway and I am going over 75 for more than 10 or 15 minutes it will get higher than 270 degrees. But the whole time my coolant temp doesn't go higher than 205. Anyone know how to bring that temp down or if its normal.
Thanks,
Richard
I don't think I have an oil cooler. I have a stock 84 vette. Well I just got an oil change a few days ago thinking that might fix it but same problem. I use the high mileage oil the pressure is about 44 when idle. I don't know what the gears are in the rear. It also smokes sometimes don't that leads me to believe its not just a sensor.
Whoa, that it NOT normal to get to 270 degrees when doing normal driving. Do you have any obstructions in the radiator area? be sure everything up front is open and clear first of all. But something is off if your coolant temps never get over 205. With a 270 oil temp your coolant temp should be around 250...
I don't think that your oil temps aren't normal even for the dry heat of Arizona. I suspect that your oil temperature sensor or a connection is bad. Try this. When you first start the Vette, flip the digital gauge over to OIL TEMP. You should see a reading of "LO" when you start up. The display changes to actual temperature around 150F or so. If your initial oil temperature reading isn't "LO" or if the display quickly jumps to the 230F plus range, I would suspect the sender or a connection is bad/corroded.
My '89 starts out "LO" and stablizes around 195F during our summer weather where the outside temperature and humidity are usually within four digits of each other. I see 215F during autocross or track events, but I have the oil cooler option. (I use Mobil 1 10W-30 and have ever since it was the standard factory fill for the '92 model year Vettes.)
