Default Suspension I.d.

I bought a front and rear suspension set from a fellow CF'er last year for a project. That's over a year ago and now I'm getting ready to start. I thought I remembered that the parts were from an '85 and they may be but the rear axel's have "Q3, 1995" on a label on them. Maybe they were replaced at that time but is there someone out there to guide me to identifying the year. Front and rear have ABS hardware. As long as they are '87 or earlier I'm in good shape. Thanks for your help.

Default Not an 85

For your reference ABS was not offered until 86, so what you have is not an 85. C4 suspension design changed in 88. A photo would help or at least the spring codes on the bottom of the springs would help define what suspension you have.

Thanks for the comment. I've heard that late in the year there could have been some units go out w/ABS, but I agree w/you that this is probably 86 or newer. I'll try to get a pic tonite and see if I can figure out how to post it.

I don't have posting priveledges so no pics. The number on the back side of the front hub is 14093184 RH ALCOA 3008316.

The axle label is 10220-9YA 918851-1408 ("w/Q3 '95 also).

My plan was to use this suspension with Wayne Dues subframe kit including IRS. Wayne's kit uses an 84-87 suspension although he now has one that will use C5 equipment. The problem is the width of 84-87 vs newer hardware (slightly wider).

I may be looking to trade/sell this hardware here on CF. Looks like I should have looked at the fine print instead of taking someone's word for it.

I think the rear ends are the same width. The brakes are different 88 and later. The front suspensions changed in 88 to.

No, the rear ends got wider by the same amount.

84-87 front has aluminum plates that the shocks bolt to, and rear shocks have upper eyelets, not shaft mount. I believe the 88-up is different in both regards.

As stated.
The extra width is in the spindle / carrier assembly therefore the rest , batwing , halfshafts , spring will fit all 84 - 96

I spoke w/Wayne last night and he can make the slight change required to make the later model suspension work.

I've got a complete ZO6 drive train that I'm putting into a '69 Camaro and I'm at the stage where I'm ready for the new subframe.

Thanks for all of your comments.

It turns out I do have the 84-87 suspension. If anyone's interested the rear for these years has small pads inside the rotor similar to regular brake pads, just smaller (in addition to the caliper and pads).
