So im building up the '92. Balance, blueprint, port & polish, cam, and tranny is being Beefed up. Hope to be in the 400-450 range when complete. So my question? Is there anything i should do to the drivetrain in this process. I dont even know what gears I have. But I do know that when you throw more power at an old rearend, they have a tendency to break. Any suggestions?

It all depends on how your going to use the car. If your plans are for just an everyday driver the rear you have now is fine, however upgrading to 3.73 will really increase you bang for your buck. Now if you plane on dong any drag racing that another story, The Dana 36 doesn't last to long so start looking for a good dana 44.

In addition, get some new Spicer ujoints, and beam plates from www.zfdoc.com.
I would consider new bushings, too. Shocks and wheel bearings, depending on their current age.
I want to keep it streetable. I had the 373 setup in my '79 camaro and loved it. So I think thats what Ill look for. Yeah i think all the shocks and bearings need replaced. the only thing the previous owner took good care of was the paint. thanks for the heads up Bogus.

Ian,
400 to 450 CHP or RWHP?
For 400RWHP or more out of a 5.7 you are going to need a higher stall torque converter and gears (I can't tell you the stall or the gears but your cam provider/engine builder/head porter shouldl be able to recomend what you need)
Putting gears in a D36 costs about half the price of a D44 however, I suggest you think about a D44.
Good luck on the Build, you are certainly due some!!
Most likely CHP, would Love IT if it made to the RWHP. But, my Cheif swears this guy is a heads genius, and he says Im not leaving with less than 400 on the ground. So we'll see what he can do.

How much dammage does the D44 make at the bank?
IAN
I know that the Chief is always right but, I don't see how your going to get that much power (400RWHP) with a cam mild enough that you won't need gears and a higher stall converter. Honestly my rear swap was easily the mod that changed my car for the better. The headers woke it up some, but the change from 2.59 to 3.45 made it so that I stop at every orange/amber light so I can punch it at the green.
Yeah I want the gears. I remember going from 2.89 to 3.73 in my old '79 maro was like night and day. I couldnt keep tires on that thing. I cant wait to see what it does to the vette.

I know what you mean my new 285/40YR-17 Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 came in a couple of days ago, however, the autoshop closes shortly after I get off work so I have to wait until Saturday to mount them. For some unknown reason the fronts still look new .
It has been snowing pretty hard today, I wonder if I'll get better snow traction with good tread.
Did you see the level where all of a sudden there are a bunch of ancillary mods necessary to remain streetable? It is a bunch of money for that extra 20-35 hp but I need it.
I need to get the Goodyears mounted to replace this! However, slow is smooth and smooth is fast in the snow!

Yeah it came right after I said "I want 400 hp"...
Even 400 CHP is going to feel pretty good and will probably be more practical than 400RWP.
Is the Chief's mechanic taking good care of you and when are you going to be back on the road?
