hi im realativley new ive got two vettes a zr1 and a 86 there both automatics the zr1 is stock and when i change the gears in it its fine but in the 86 when i change it from park to reverse or drive it jerks harder than the Zr1 and at 70 mph and above its like the gas doesnt wanna go and its like its in a lower gear i mean its not groaning its wanting to go faster than ill let it lol no problem i wuz just wondering if this is tranny problem or cuz theres so much torque 410 ft of torque lol so any help is neccessary thx
The TPI cars have a pretty tight converter on them, you will definitely feel it when it goes into gear. If you have a higher stall converter in the Z that can "soften" it up some, same with the shifts. Its still doing its job, you just dont feel it as pronounced if the converter is slipping a bit.
i no but theh Z is pushing out 450 horsepower with 500 ft of torque..... and its smooth as ever but the 86 jerks HARD but i had a stock 90 and it didnt jerk either is there a way to tell if the trannys messed up or what
What auto trans is in the zr1? Also, who converted it and what trans did they install.
no ZR1 came with an auto, and the ZF6 is one damn strong transmission. WHy replace it with an auto and ruin a perfectly good car? or...are you SURE it's a ZR1?

The 700R4's had a change made to them in 89 or 90 that softened the "bang" when they went from P or N into D or R...someone once told me it was a secondary valve body...dunno if that's the truth or not.

That is true. The aux valve body also contains an "abuse" valve. It softens the hit to the clutch pack when the car is slammed back and forth between reverse and drive. People were blowing up the early 700r4's when they were stuck in snow or mud and rocked the car back and forth.
I could be wrong, but I think a few folks are having doubts as to the authenticity of your ZR-1. A few pics (of the LT-5 coupled with the auto) should alleviate their skepticism.
You're gonna have fun here ZR1 RACER. Why don't you head on over to Off Topic and post a few new topics. Better yet, try out the Politics, Religion, And Controversy section. It's lots of fun. I promise.
Because of the high rpm redline in my zr-1, I decided to convert it to a powerglide. It runs well. Turns high 8's in the quarter. It does not bang at all on the shifts. Possibly because I have a 5500 stall converter. Consider this swap for your zr-1. It worked out fine for me.
no not really, but like they said, we need pics, because we know no ZR1's came with an auto, and TT with a 150 shot? i doubt it...that might have worked on the civic forums but not here...
