Default Back to Valve Cover Question

The below statements and questions refer to my 1994 LT1, A4

I still have to order cam, rocker arms, lifters and pushrods for my engine build up, and want to make sure I get the right combinations of parts that fit and work together. After searching and reviewing all the past threads on valve cover clearance, one thing that I can definitely say is, which valve cover will clear, for what application is clear as mud.

I would not mind putting polished aftermarket valve covers on the car, but I'm afraid of clearance problems under the alternator bracket up front on the left bank. Also, I'd like to retain the crankcase breather on the inside of the right bank valve cover. If I knew unequivocally that there was such a cover, I’d order them now.

Alternatively, if I knew unequivocally that a specific 1.6 rocker arm would fit under my stock valve covers I’d buy those and retain my stock valve covers.

If anyone can identify either a specific 1.6 rocker that will fit under the stock covers with minor modification (I’m not looking for “it might work” or “keep cutting until it fits”) please let me know.

If anyone can identify a taller valve cover that will fit under the alternator bracket and be drilled or has provision for the crankcase breather hose let me know.

Thanks in advance

If you cut the oil drip tabs off, you can run almost any roller rocker. I have ran both the Crane Gold and Comp Cams Pro Magnums on my 94 with modified stock valve covers.

Does this effect anything? I guess those tabs are to collect oil splash and direct it to a place it might do some good? Not sure? Anyway thanks.

More experiences please?

Default Crane Gold

I installed a set of Crane gold 1.6 RR's on the wife's '95 stock LT1. Original covers fit without modification. Engine has a little rougher idle, but seems to be quite a bit stronger. Bigger improvement than I was expecting. From a 10 mph rolling start (auto tranny), the stock engine would smoke the tires. Hooked up solid from a 20 mph start. Took an average of 8.53 seconds to go from 20 to 80 mph. Would have timed it to a higher speed, but felt I had to demonstrate some level of responsibility to teen aged son in the car with me. Haven't timed it with the RR's installed, but do notice that the tires will break loose from a 20 mph start and again at the 1-2 shift. Tried to time it by myself, but wasn't comfortable steering, shifting, and punching clock. When the weather dries up, I'll let yall know some actual numbers. On a recent 400 mile trip, the car averaged 23.5 mpg. Had some 80 mph cruising and quite a bit of stop and go around construction. Pleased with the mod so far.

if you buy a set of roller rockers for the late model head that are self aligning they will fit under stock covers. you may need to trim the drip tabs off but no big deal.

Unequivocally, the Crane 1.6 RR that come with the Hotcam kit for LT1 fit under the Proform valve covers. All the aftermarket valve covers have a center mount for the crankcase breather. Thanks to Jeff Kopp at Superior I bought a crankcase breather hose for the 92 model that goes from the center to under the fuel injection cover and is a neat fit. The hard plastic breather of the 94 will not work, but all I had to do with the 92 piece was grind on my fuel injection cover on the passenger side .

On the Driver side you will have to grind on the back side of the alternator to clear the Proform valve covers. Once it fits the part you grind is out of sight. You also need a washer or two between the alt brace and the intake manifold.

I need to redo my web site and get it loaded to Verizon so I can post pictures. It does all work, and it looks like the pieces were made for the car.

Actually I can upload a couple pictures to putfile right now. Give me a few.

Here are three pictures to confirm what I just said. Warning, they are big.

The part number for the hose I'm not sure about from the desscription on the receipt : 22048212. For sure it is a crank case breather hose for 92 Vette, a formed length of hose. Call to make sure you get the right thing.

I have Comp Cam 1.6RR and was having a hard time getting the stock covers to fit. I bought some tall chrome GM jobs and they wouldn't clear the alternator. Back to plan A and the dremel and low and behold I finally got them to fit.

I'm doing the same...

I hope this helps, the Proforms are a GREAT looking valve cover...
