Like many of you, I am extremely paranoid of being rear-ended. So I decided to switch my 85's lights over to LEDs.
I bought a bunch of 1156 LED bulbs (normal stem, about 8 LEDs instead of the element) in various colors.
The first bulb I tried out was an 1156 amber for the front signal markers. I put on the flashers, and changed the bulb on one side to see the difference. It lit up MUCH quicket, but set off the interior chime as it lit up.

I can't guess what's causing your problem but I will say that LEDs are a big improvement in lighting, safety-wise, and I don't consider them rice per se as long as the overall appearance remains stock. I've replaced with and/or added LED lighting on the trucks I work on for a living and have not run into any problems. They also reduce current demands on the battery and henceforth the charging system. Good luck with it.

I've got those bulbs in the rear of my 85 with no issues whatsoever. I sure can't help you but just wanted to let you know that I am having no trouble with them.

This is what happens when you stop and they don't--
In the spring I will install "LED's" and a third ( under the hatch LED ) brake light!! There must be a forum vender who sells them ( I haven't looked yet):

The lack of third brake light is what worries me most. I like the clean looks, but I want to make sure my stop lights are as bright as possible
My guess would be the different electrical characteristics of leds versus incandescent bulbs. Leds use much less current than regular bulbs. There are led conversions designed to mimic the draw of incandescent to avoid confusing the bulb warning system.

"Bilyk"-- there's a red 88 (I think) in my neighborhood with the 3rd. light under the hatch -- thats what I want to do ( less wind resistance at 11.66 squared )
what year passat did that come out of, and i would like to see closer pics of the install, i was thinking of doing the tahoe 3rd brake lamp where the factory one would be, but i want something that is very stealth, and something that is inside....... how is the glare when you step on the brake?
Initially I suspected that the chime was to indicate that a bulb was burned out? I'll have to play with it some more tomorrow.
Midnight 85, did you put in the clear or the red LED's in the rear? Are they 2057's or 1157's?
How do they look at night?
I used the red ones by recommendation from a seller. They have a different look to them at night almost a starburst pattern, I like them a lot. I for one do not care for the 3rd brake light so that is the reason I wanted brighter bulbs. I wish the taillights came apart, I would paint the reflector area silver. I did this on my Pro Street Chevelle I had and everybody always thought my brake lights were on until I hit the brakes and they really lit up.
