I am in the process of removing the rear end from my 87, to service, change the pinion seal and install the rear poly bushing kit. I am at the point of disconnecting the 2 halfshafts from the diff but I can't turn them to get to the u-jopint strap bolts. The driveshaft is disconnected and the park brake is off. I can get the shafts to turn about a an inch either way but that is it. Is this normal or is something locked up inside the diff? The car has been sitting for 4 years. Could the diff be froze up?
Like I was saying I can turn the rotors, the halfshafts and all about an inch either way, I can even see the pinion yoke move back and forth but I can't turn it enough to get to the other bolts

in fact I now have a box end ratchet wrench stuck on one of the bolts cuz I can't back it out any farther and in order to switch the rotation of the wrench you have to turn it over so I can't even screw it back in to get the wrench off.
Try a breaker bar between the lugs, or bottom out a lugnut and try to turn the diff that way. Something is hanging up if you can't spin the halfshaft's with your hand.
I had a breaker bar on the lugs and still nothing, When I parked this car 4 years ago it was working fine, my concern is that the oil in the diff was mainly water and is now rust I know the seal was shot as the oil is all under the car and all over the suspension. So if oil got out then maybe water got in.
Just trying to help...I'd put a tire on it...it will give you more leverage. If that didn't work, I'd put both tires on , and put it on the ground to "rock it" loose. That wrench could be a problem though. Good luck.
drop the whole *** end of the car in one piece...worry about it when it's out of the car
Well I jacked each side of the suspension til i could get the to the strap bolts and as soon as I got the left side disconnected the diff was freed up and turning. I tried to turn the left halfshat to see if it would turn but it wouldn't. I decided to remove the calipers and rotors. It turned out to be the park brake pads rusted to the inside of the rotors and I had to beat the rotors off with a sledge . Luckily I already ordered new rotors and pads. Anyways all that is left now is the 2 rear C-beam bbolts and the 2 batwing bolts and the diff is out.
Thanks to all for the replies, you all are #1 IMHO!!
