I have been looking into the feasibility of upgrading my 92 to remote entry, which wasn't a factory option until 93. But since the system came with power locks, I can't imagine the mod. can be that much. Anybody tried? Using either aftermarket or factory? I have made upgrades in hot rods using other components, programmed the receiver using the remote transmitters, etc. But I also know you can spend a lot of time messing with modifications, and there may be some simpler ways - you usually learn about after you finish.

The main thing is you need to find a module that has a connection to disable your VATS. This "trigger" wire arms/disarms your VATS in place of the required key unlock/disable.
Hope that made sense.
Used to be you could get a add-on module from bulldog, jcwhitney, etc. for about $40-$50.
Other options include an add-on alarm system with that function built in. This would add additional security to your car -- and their are some cool options... Proximity detectors (like radar for verts), paging devices, starter kill, etc...
Adding remote entry would be a no brainier. I dont have prices in front of me but I think that you should be able to find a unit for under $40 plus a couple of $1 relays. Most mfgs have all the wire colors you need. I dont know your skill level but you could do an entire alarm in about 3 hours.
I too want to add just a remote or passive entry to my 92 vette and have been looking at a number of systems including JC Witney but want to talk to someone who has done this to a 92 to keep things simple.
I do not want to add an additional alarm, just the remote entry to the existing door locks.
GREGGPEN, why is it necessary to bypass the VATS in order to add remote entry. Does the existing power door lock system set the VATS? If so why won't an added on system to the existing power door lock circuit disasrm them when you open the door with the remote?
Not to hijack the thread and my apologies for all the questions.
Thanks for any help.

I made it for my 84 as well. I used a standard 2 channel remote control device that you can buy at many electronic stores. The relays are wired in parallel to the wires that connect to the push buttons in the door. The receiver is located near the steering column. The wire harness of the left hand door is entereing the car there, so easy to connect and plenty of room. I just connected the relays in parallel with the switches. The only problem I have is, when I want to activate the alarm, I first have to close lock at the remote BEFORE I actually close the door. When I close the door fist, the alarm is not armed.
One of the reasons I thot I would put it to the group is due to an experience with Car Toys. On the rack the system was quoted as $139. After talking with a salesperson, and getting the add-ons that weren't included, and getting the additional labor to install ('cause vettes are sooo tight and full sized people have to work very hard to fix them) the cost for the system was over $500. That made me think maybe it wasn't going to be worth the cost. But I'm not so sure I wasn't being taken advantage of...
I had it done to my 91 at Ultimate Electronics. No added alarm, just a remote door lock and hatch oppper. The system never has worked properly. About every 3rd time I press a button on the remote, the alarm goes off. I took it back once, and they said they fixed it, but they didn't. The store has since gone out of business. I would of preferred to keep my $200 and just used the key to unlock the door.
If you get it done, be sure to get it done by someone has a clue.
