I have the 84, is it typical that the crankshaft pulley is so close to the crossmember that the serpentine belt won't slide out from underneath it to change? Mine is, the belt won't slide past it!
On my '89, the belt will not come past the front face of the pulley
while the belt is flat, but it slips out when it is tipped on edge.
IIRC, there is a stamped clip/retainer of some kind immediately in front
of the pulley that the belt sometimes catches on. This just means a
little more jockeying to slip the belt past the clip.
Well I tried all I can think of, I tipped it forward then backword. It just doesn't want to come out of there. It must be attached to the pulley! ha,ha. The space between the pulley and crossmember is about the same of that of a screwdriver edge.
Is there an easy way to lift the motor just a little? As much as I don't want to say or do this can I put the floor jack with some padding just up against the oil pan and just give it a ever so much "tweak" to get that pulley up just a hair? Might sound foolish but thats all I can think of at this point. I'm up for any other suggestions?
thanks
Short piece of 2x4 between jack and pan shouldn't create any problems with little pressure.
Holy Cow! I have never had this much problem with a belt!. I put the 2x4 on the saddle of the floor jack, then gave it a little pressure on the oil pan every so slowly. I could see the pulley raised a little, still had to take a large screwdriver and wedge between the pulley and crossmember, finally it started to come off. Once off I did notice that the new belt wasn't as thick as the one I took off. The new one slipped right on. Hopefully I'll never have to replace the belt on the side of the road, I'd have to get towed.
Thanks guys for your help.
Could the motor mounts be bad or compressed? Just asking, I am not famaliar with an 84 setup. Just can't believe there isn't any room to swap out a common wear part..
What about the tranny mount? If it is too high it would tilt the motor forward/down. I'm picking straws here.
I would climb all over it and see if there is a reason why it is that close. Belt goes out a long way from home would really suck.
Glad to hear that you got it back on with minimal hair pulling. I would think most of us here know what it is like to get hung up on something that was suppose to be simple.
I just pulled the motor out of my '84 today and the belt to crossmember
clearance is slim. It can out on mine, but you had to position it just
right. As far as the motormounts compressing, I don't see that as
possible. They are very thin and can't compress much it any.
Maybe you just got a thick belt like you said.
I've been all over the bottom of that car and I don't see anything out of whack. I think it had to do with the belt itself, the new one is about a pennies edge thinner than the one I took out of there. Now if I try to remove its still real tight but can be removed.
CFI Like I said in several post above...I am not famaliar with 84's and I was picking straws. Just attempting to help out and get a picture in my head how this is setup. GWS figured it out and I learned more then he did.
Now that you have set me on the right track with all c4's are the same as far as not having tranny mounts go, I can go on my way on learn something else.
I would simply cut the old belt with a pair of wire cutters and pull it out. If you are installing a new one, but if you are planning on using the old belt then my suggetion won't help.

I was thinking the same thing. I would have cut it before jacking up the engine.
I guess he didn't know that the new one would fit without jacking.

I thought to myself several times about cutting it. But I didn't because I wanted to be sure that I could get a new one on. At the time I didn't know that the two belts were going to be different thickness. But I will say that even with the new belt I played hell getting it on having to twist it just right, and taking a big screwdriver and wedging it in between the crossmember and pulley and slightly forcing the pulley up just a hair to get it on.
I wouldn't want to replace again this belt anytime soon.
